Dido: An Easy Listening Favorite

British pop singer Dido got her international big break in 2000, when Eminem sampled a part of her song, "Thank You" in "Stan." Her subdued, haunting vocals – a a stark contrast to Eminem's harsh, angry rapping – caught the attention of listeners, and soon, "Thank You" climbed the ranks of international hit charts, even reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.  With “White Flag,” her next single to become an international hit, also being a mellow song, she gradually became known for her soothing vocals and moving ballads.

Although Dido’s subsequent albums and singles failed to match or surpass the popularity of “Thank You” and “White Flag,” she remained to be a reputable source of easy listening for her fans. With her voice sometimes being described as ethereal and dreamy, her music continued to evoke scenarios such as cuddling with a lover on a cold, rainy morning; taking a leisurely stroll down a park; or enjoying a cup of warm tea in a quiet café.

This March, however, the British balladeer returned from a five-year hiatus with a new album, “Girl Who Got Away,” which she described as sounding more electronic and upbeat. Fans wondered whether this meant a change in her image or a new direction. Yet the change in sound turned out to be subtle, as the singles she released so far were still relaxing and catchy love songs – so far, nothing markedly different from her signature sound. Consequently, some critics described the singer as boring and sleepy. For them, this latest album might be seen as a sign of the singer’s stagnancy and aversion to risks, but for fans, it is a relief that, despite dabbling in new musical styles, Dido remains true to her roots, delivering the pleasant, calming songs that she has always been known for.
